Jaime de Oliveira Gontijo: Contra-Mestre Papa-Léguas, was Born 19 June 1981 in Patos de Minas, Minas Gerais, Brazil. He started Capoeira at the age of 14 in Patos de Minas, where he was training under the monitoring of Contra-Mestre Chicote.

The first group he joined was Grupo Afro, but after two years his former teacher split from this group and they moved under the group Raizes – Cordão De Ouro of Mestre Ze Paulo in Belo Horizonte, Mina Gerais.

Formed as Instructor, and already teaching together with his former teacher, he decided in 2000 to move to London where, with the help of Professor Rilene and Rejane from the Group Amazonas Capoeira, he started to give his first classes in the UK.

Then he moved to Burton on Trent for 6 months where he taught Capoeira at the local college in the performing arts course. In 2001 he moved again, this time to Nottingham where he established his group, Cordão De Ouro Nottingham. His work started to grow and in 2004 he opened the first Cordão De Ouro Academy in the UK. Since then Cordão De Ouro Nottingham has continued to grow, to include classes in schools and universities.

In November 2008 he moved to Crete, to open up another branch of Cordão De Ouro in Heraklion, handing over the Nottingham group to two of his leading graduated students, Instructors Tatu and Tatanka. In June 2009 CDO Heraklion celebrated its first Batizado (grading event), with visiting masters and teachers from throughout Europe and the UK attending. In June 2010, CDO Heraklion celebrated its second very successful batizado.

In January 2011, Contra Mestre Papa Leguas moved back to the UK to continue his coordination of his UK groups and has now opened a new group in Norwich. CM Papa Leguas will be teaching classes to all levels and guiding Instructors Cascao and Medusa, who will take the classes in his absence.

Mestre Suassuna (Reynaldo Ramos Suassuna, born in 1938) is the creator of our group Cordão De Ouro. He is one of the most influential Mestres of Capoeira, preserving the beauty and art, as well as promoting the development of cultural and social aspects. He was one of the first mestres of Capoeira in São Paulo and the creator of a particular training style called Miudinho which is practised in our group today.

Mestre Suassuna started Capoeira in Itabuna, Bahia in 1957/58, later joining Mestre Bimba’s academy in Salvador. He performed in Salvador with other legends of Capoeira such as Mestre Canijiquinha, Mestre Gato, Mestre Waldemar, and soon opened a small academy in Itabuna.

Training with the likes of Mestre Waldemar, Mestre Pastinha and Mestre Bimba, he enjoyed learning all the aspects of Capoeira (something that he still teaches to all of his pupils) taking all that he liked from other people’s styles and techniques and using it in his own game. He was known for his amazing agility, technique, speed of execution, sense of humour, and creativity.

Mestre Suassuna has had a monumental career, being one of the main figures responsible for the contemporary Capoeira we see today.

History of CDO Indonesia

CDO Indonesia was previously named Capoeira Vadiar Indonesia by Contra-Mestre Papa Leguas from his first-time coming to Indonesia. Its members came from many different cities in Indonesia such as Jakarta, Surabaya, Yogyakarta, Bogor, Kediri, Lamongan and Ngawi.

Based on one vision to learn the real capoeira, these young men make contact and exchange information with C.M Papa-Leguas from CDO Nottingham. And on 2008, they finally invited C.M. Papa-Leguas to come to Indonesia. From the short visit, the Contra-Mestre taught many things of about Capoeira and then Capoeira Vadiar Indonesia was formed.

On October 2009, the second-coming of C.M. Papa-Leguas, He and His Teacher, Mestre Suassuna (by message) officially announced the change of Capoeira Vadiar Indonesia into Cordao de Ouro Indonesia.

The Story of Cordão de Ouro

In 1967, Mestre Suassuna and Mestre Brasília founded the association of Groupo Capoeira Cordão de Ouro
in São Paolo, Brazil. Until today, Mestre Suassuna is the president of our group,
which now has spread all over Brazil and the world. Mestre Suassuna believes a good capoeirista should be able to play in any kind of roda, indepent if it is a roda of
Capoeira Regional or Capoeira Angola. That is why the philosophy of Cordão de Ouro is to learn all styles of capoeira and not to choose one or the
other.

‘Cordão de Ouro’ means belt of gold and it was taken from a song, written before the division of capoeira in Angola and Regional was made.

Belts and Grading

The experience of a capoeirista is reflected by the
colors of the belt he is wearing. A player recieves his
first belt in a ceremony called the Batizado.

Capoeira History

Capoeira is often described as a combination of martial arts, dance and acrobratics. Originally it was used as a disguished fight by the slaves who were shipped to Brazil and put to labour. They made it look like a dance, but in reality they were training their fighting skills to be able to stand up against their slave masters and fight for their freedom.

Since that time capoeira has developed in Brazil and nowadays there are two styles of capoeira: Capoeira Angola and Capoeira Regional.

Capoeira is played in a circle (roda). The circle consists of the ‘bateria’, the people playing the instruments and thereby deciding what is happening within the roda, and the rest of the capoeiristas clapping and singing along to raise the energy. There are always two people playing in the roda.
